Sheffield
Sheffield City Council and the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive undertook a joint venture to commission the design, engineering, manufacture and installation of over 100 bespoke Pedestrian Information Signs and Transport Sign Flags, comprising a family of 4 monolith types. Wood&Wood Signs, under competitive tender, won the contract to deliver the client’s project.
Wood&Wood's technical design engineers used 3D CAD technology to model the monoliths in detail and presented design proposals to the client and graphic designer, to ensure that the design intent for a slender, clean, stainless steel and glass clad unit was met.
Wood&Wood converted the ‘virtual sign prototype’ 3D CAD data in the form of 2D drawings and CNC cutting data to manufacture all component parts, from handmade bespoke hinges to laser cut stainless steel panels. Each monolith was hand assembled to exacting standards before leaving the factory.
In a late development to the project, Wood&Wood adapted the client’s need to have ‘real time’ information incorporated into the Transport Sign Flag Units. This involved the incorporation of display screens, WI-FI technology and associated electronic equipment.
Wood&Wood successfully took charge of the complex commissioning programme, which involved night-time installation, in busy public areas, to stringent Health and Safety regulations and tight timescales.
