BBC Scotland
The BBC wanted the external signage for their striking new Scottish Headquarters to reflect the buildings high-tech status and its unique position on the banks of the Clyde. As an approved sign supplier to the BBC and with a strong reputation in manufacturing architectural signage, Wood&Wood were invited to take part in a competitive pitch and were selected to manufacture and install the external and internal signage.
The scale of the building meant the external signage had to be of a proportionally large size; also there was a requirement for the lettering to create an impact at night as well as during the day. Working with the client’s brand guidelines, Wood&Wood produced large-scale individual letters to create BBC, each one measuring 4.15m2 and weighing 290kg. Manufactured from extruded aluminium covered with a “flex face” to ensure there are no visible joins, they are illuminated using LED technology.
To create the “Scotland” element of sign, Wood&Wood engineered LED illuminated lettering using specialised acrylic, which appears black during the day and white when illuminated at night.
The sheer size of the signage and the physical location meant stringent health and safety procedures had to be adopted throughout the installation and specialised equipment employed.
The complete “BBC Scotland” spans an impressive 31 metres.
