Educational Campus signage

Client Lancaster University

Lancaster University was established in 1964 and has over one hundred thousand alumni across the world.  It is committed to undertaking research as well as teaching and is highly ranked in each of the UK’s major university league tables, including The Guardian (10th) the Complete University Guide (9th) and the Times (11th).

The University now has about twelve thousand full-time students studying at Lancaster for first and higher degrees, and about seven hundred academic staff out of a total staff complement of over two thousand.

The Challenge

Following a rigorous tendering process for pedestrian and vehicle wayfinding signage by the NEUPC – North Eastern Universities Purchasing Consortium, Wood and Wood were appointed to manufacture and install signage according to detailed design guidelines.

Signage requirements ranged from aluminium directional panels mounted in robust stainless-steel frames, to 3m high, fully illuminated monoliths with non-reflective glass. These, along with a range of smaller building label signs amounted to more than 250 units in total.

The Solution

Working closely with the designers and client, Wood and Wood produced a suit of signs that, with very detailed finishing and installation, blended beautifully with the campus surroundings.

Using signage casings, with a coordinated colour scheme to highlight different areas, the wayfinding system came alive.

At night the campus glows with light from the monoliths, guiding people to their destinations.
