Eurotunnel

Design & installation of a 14M w x 7M h illuminated flexface sign on a severely sloped hill.

Client Eurotunnel

The Eurotunnel runs between Folkestone in the UK and Coquelles near Calais in France, enabling regular, high speed travel between the two countries.

Wood & Wood were appointed to both design and install a 14M w x 7M h illuminated flexface sign to welcome travellers to the tunnel.

The Challenge

The most challenging thing about this installation was the site conditions.  The location for the sign was a steep sloping site adjacent to the motorway, on which we needed to install a large freestanding structure incorporating a complicated ‘arch’ design.

Our Solution

We completed the manufacture of all parts of the structure, including the flex face, support framework and arch, in-house at our factory and took complete ownership of the logistics which included specialist groundwork infrastructure.  This ensured smooth delivery and installation with minimal disruption to the road-users. In order to illuminate the sign, we first trialled various LED options before interfacing with an existing solar power supply system which enabled us to achieve the desired illumination effect.

The end result is a visually impressive installation giving maximum brand impact that will be viewed by at around 10 million passengers a year.
