Birmingham Airport

External signage for Birmingham Airport’s new “One Terminal”.

Client Birmingham Airport

For many years Birmingham airport had served the Midlands as the international airport which supports the UK’s second city, carrying around nine million people each year to a variety of UK, European and International locations.

As part of a major investment that included a runaway extension, the merging of its two existing terminals into one single terminal building and the unveiling of a new brand, Wood and Wood were appointed to design, manufacture and install new external signage for Birmingham Airport’s new “One Terminal”

The Challenge

The key challenges with this project centred around not only how best to translate the Airport’s new identity into a striking external signage for the terminal but also to manufacture and install the signs within a fixed timeframe whilst keeping disruption to a minimum in this busy airport environment.

Our Solution

By employing the skills of our design and manufacturing teams we successfully manufactured the 3-metre diameter logo device in four pieces with stainless steel cut outs which were then joined seamlessly. The high level letters were manufactured in built up stainless steel with opaque acrylic and coloured vinyl applied with energy efficient LED illumination that lights up the striking blue sign at night.

Our skilled installation team used specialist equipment to raise the signs and then fix them at a high level by bolting them through the glass structure, with the work completed at times to minimise the impact on the passenger experience.
