Apollo Victoria Theatre

Internal signage for a West End theatre

Client Ambassador Theatre Group

Opened in 1930 as a cinema and variety theatre, the 2328 seat Apollo Victoria theatre is currently the home of the musical Wicked, which has played at the venue for twelve years as of 2018.

The Challenge

Wood and Wood were invited to participate in a competitive tender for the replacement of internal signage in this art deco building, which required clever use of materials to keep the magical feel of it’s unique interior.  Timescales for the tender were extremely tight.

Our Solution

Working closely with the designers, screen print, metal and wall fitting samples were swiftly manufactured and dispatched for review.  After the initial site survey, visual design and technical drawing packs were produced.

Due to the ambient lighting in the theatre, the majority of internal signage was designed as illuminated lightboxes. Matt opal silk acrylic perspex with black blockout vinyl was used in the manufacture of these illuminated ceiling and wall mounted signs, with all non-illuminated signs using an opaque matt natural moonlight white perspex .

A4 wall mountable, digitally printed and interchangeable foamex panels made up most of the rest of the signage.
